Background:
Marjo worked in hospitals and private practices in South Africa and England in the 1980’s before immigrating with her husband to New Zealand in 1987. She then worked in a variety of sports practices, including with David Abercrombie. Marjo worked as an Occupational Health Physiotherapist in the 2000’s developing a holistic approach to clients who required assistance to return to work while still rehabilitating from an injury.
Marjo graduated with a B.Sc Physiotherapy at the University of Cape Town and Dip MT at the University of Stellenbosch. She has continued attending numerous post graduate physiotherapy courses since then.
Marjo swam competitively at a national level as a scholar and currently competes at Masters Level, having frequently medalled in Open Water and Pool Events nationally. She further developed her passion for swimming by coaching since 2006. She is currently coaching teenagers, as well as master swimmers and triathletes at the Devonport Swim Club. Marjo has completed Swimming NZ coaching courses and is in training to become a classifier for Paralympic swimmers.
Marjo further developed as a Physiotherapist with her special interest in swimming by working with swimmers who have injuries reducing their ability to train effectively as well as working with people who want to use swimming as part of their rehabilitation for an injury. She works one on one with swimmers at the pool.
After Marjo performs a land based assessment of the swimmer, a biomechanical assessment of the client’s swim technique in the pool is performed to assess what impact their swimming is having on their injury and/or vice versa. Feedback to the swimmer is provided by video analysis which facilitates quick and efficient stroke improvement leading to improved injury management. A land based exercise program as well as a swim drill program is recommended to address the swimmer’s injury.
